Colombo, the Commercial capital of
Sri Lanka. Like many capital cities in developing
countries Colombo is fast changing its face. In no time,
skyscrapers arise from where old buildings once stood,
yet in some parts; the old world charm is retained.
Embark on a shopping spree until you
drop in the famous Colombo shopping malls placing your
hands on world famous brands at unbelievable prices.
Also you could visit several landmarks in Colombo while
you shop for example; there is a 100-year-Old clock tower and several British built, colonial
buildings, which still attract all of us. Other places
of interest are, the Pettah bazaar, where one can shop
for bargains, Hindu and Buddhist temples, residential
areas where you find the stately homes of the affluent,

Day 05
After breakfast at the hotel leave for Polonnaruwa.
After an early breakfast let’s make our way to one of
the famous historical cities in Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa,
this is the island’s splendid medieval capital
established as the first city of the land in the 11th
Century A.D. It replaced Anuradhapura, plundered made
desolate, and laid hopelessly bare to the invading
armies from South India. Three Kings dominate the annals
of the city and the period. The city reached a dazzling
but pitifully brief zenith in the 12th century and
though ravaged by invasion in the centuries following,
much evidence remains of the old grandeur and glory.
The day is all yours; explore this
historical city hoping from one to another attraction.
Some of the many magical works of the yesterday’s man
that you can not afford to miss in this tour of
Polonnaruwa are;
- Statue of King Parakramabahu – On
the Southern side of the Parakrama Samudra and South
of the picturesque lakeside resthouse is another
well known Polonnaruwa monument – a striking stone
colossus of bearded man holding in his hands what
seems to be a yoke. The care-worn expression hints
at royalty and popular belief identifies it as
Parakramabahu the Great.
- Potgul Vehera – The statue faces
the Potgul Vehera, an interesting feature of which
is a circular, shrine, built of brick.
- Nissanka Lata Mandapaya – A very
pretty pavilion which was used to chanting Buddha’s
teaching. This floral edifice in stone has pillars
which simulate with rare grace, a lotus on a stalk.
- Tha Vatadage – This circular
relic house possess an elegance and beauty that is
rare even in Sri Lanka. In line with the outer
circle of stone pillars is a tastefully ornamented
screen wall patterned with four petal led flowers.
At the head of each flight is a Buddha statue in
stone. The shrine is lavished with moonstones and
guard stones.
- Gal Potha (Stone Book) – A
massive 27 ft. stone slab which lies by the side of
the Hatadage is inscribed with the deeds of King
Nissankamall.
- Gal Vihare – The most impressive
sculptures at Polonnaruwa are the colossal 04 Buddha
images carved on the face of granite boulder at the
Gal Vihare. The recumbent Buddha measures 46 ft. and
the standing figure is 23 ft. in height.
- Rankot Vehera (12 Century A.D.)
– Built by Nissankamalla, this dagoba is the largest
in Polonnaruwa and measures 550 ft. in girth.
- Palace and Royal Pavilion –
Enclosed by ramparts four leagues long and seven
leagues wide the Royal Citadel has many interesting
monuments. A little further on is the handsome royal
bath, the Kumara Pokuna. Across the way is the
beautiful Royal Audience Hall – embellished with
lion portals, graceful pillars and a moonstone which
is a delicately carved steeping stone.
The list is continual, once you have
explored much as you want make your way to the Parakrama
Samudraya by evening, an irrigation tank built on 5940
acres by King Parakramabahu the Great and so well named
this as a ‘SEA’.
Distance from Trincomalee to
Polonnaruwa 130 KM/ Duration of Travel 03 ½ Hrs.
Overnight Stay in Polonnaruwa.
Day 06
After Breakfast leave for Kandy. Enroute
visit the rock cave temple. Dambulla rock temple is a
vast isolated rock mass and it was here that king
Valagambahu took refuge in the 01st century B.C. He
later turned the caves into a rock temple. Dambulla is a
world heritage site and is the most impressive of Sri
Lanka's cave temples. The complex of five caves with
over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls and ceilings found
here are over 2,000 years old and is the largest area of
paintings found in the world. The caves contain over 150
images of the Buddha of which the largest is the
colossal figure of the Buddha carved out of rock and
spanning 14 meters. Also visit a spice garden and a
batik factory in Matale.
Distance from Polonnaruwa to
Kandy via Matale 140 KM/ Duration of Travel 03 ½ Hrs.
Overnight Stay in Kandy
Day 07
‘Kandy’. This is, perhaps Sri Lanka’s
most beautiful town. Set 488 meters above sea level, and
next to Colombo, Kandy is Sri Lanka’s most visited
place. The focal point of the town is the golden-roofed
‘Dalada Maligawa’, where the sacred tooth relic of the
Buddha is enshrined. There are numerous shrines and
temples in and around Kandy, where you will see rare
paintings, frescoes, and stone carvings.
If the time permits we will have the
opportunity to do some shopping in Kandy, where you
could fetch souvenirs in wood, copper, silver, brass,
ebony, and bronze, ceramics, lacquer work, handlooms,
batiks, jewellery and rush and reed-ware.
Also visit The Royal Botanic Gardens
at ‘Peradeniya’ where you could treat your eyes to an
amazing, wide and rare collection of tropical and
temperate, exotic and indigenous flora, and an orchid
house with the largest collection in Asia.
After exploring the city of Kandy
proceed to Nuwaraeliya for the overnight.
Distance from Kandy to
Nuwaraeliya 77 KM/ Duration of Travel 03 ½ Hrs.
Overnight Stay in Nuwaraeliya.
Day 08
Breakfast at the hotel. Free day in
Nuwaraeliya. Nuwaraeliya set in the heart of
tea-country, this beautiful town is where the British
succeeded in creating a replica of the English
countryside, with homes in styles from Georgian to Queen
Anne. Well-kept lawns with hedges, an Anglican church, a
famous golf course and beautiful parks give the place an
air of nostalgia. Situated 1,890 meters above sea level,
the air is cool and fresh – a serene retreat from the
hustle and bustle of Colombo. Close to Nuwaraeliya is
Horton Plains, Sri Lanka’s highest and most isolated
plateau. Nature lovers will revel in this wide, patna-grass
covered plain, the haunt of many wild, yet harmless,
animals and the home of many species of birds. Bridle
paths will take you to the precipice known as World’s
End – a sheer drop of 1,050 meters. Acres and acres of
tea with its lush green foliage extend miles across the
hills, and no visit to the hill country is complete
without a visit to a tea estate, and the chance to
purchase some of the world’s finest flavoured tea.
Overnight Stay in Nuwaraeliya.
Day 09
After breakfast at the hotel proceed
to Negombo through Kithulgala. Film buffs may enjoy Sri
Lanka’s River Kwai - Kelani River, scene of the 1957
film. It is well signed but you may have difficulty
avoiding “guides”. If you would rather enjoy the
orchards and expanse of farmland in your own secret
retreat, Paradise Farm has a stunning setting at the
peak of a hill with home grown fruit/vegetables and wild
boar on the menu!
Kithulgala has good swimming areas
and for the more adventurous it is one centre for the
white water rafting. Rafters Retreat offers excellent
rafting excursions and in our opinion, provides the most
adventurous and comfortable tree houses in the World.
‘Negombo’ a characteristic fishing
town north of Colombo, which is a mere 6 km from the
international airport. Set amidst lush groves of coconut
palms, it breathes the spirit of the sea. Negombo is a
